Our History

Our cottage has a rich history that dates back to the 1850s when it was the first to be built in the row. Over the next few decades, additional houses were built, each with their unique shapes and sizes, giving the row a quirky charm that is truly one of a kind.
In the late 1960s, the two up, two down cottage was extended to the back, and in the early 1970s, it was bought by the McNamee family, who still own the property today.
In 2022, at the tender age of 92, Mrs. Ruth McNamee decided to move to a nearby Marigold Hotel, and we decided to "keep it in the family" and offer the cottage to guests as a holiday home.
Restoration
On Valentine's Day 2022, we started restoring the cottage, so we could welcome our guests in the summer that year. However, like in Grand Designs, things often take longer than expected, and our "sprucing up" ended up taking almost a year. During this time, we uncovered some amazing things about the cottage that we're excited to share with you.
We discovered in the wall that divided the lounge and the stairs, which we stripped back revealing a myriad of old bits of boxes dating back to the 1930s, possibly even earlier. We've even preserved one of these box parts on display where the wall originally was.
We found that the granite hearth had been filled in and plastered over. The granite rocks which line the path to the rear patio came from inside the hearth.
We also found a sign by the back door in the utility room, which had been a shelf in a cupboard for over 50 years.
And lastly, the wood in each of the window seats at the front are made from reclaimed floorboards, which were once the internal walls dividing the two front bedrooms.
